We all watched DOA's last show of 2024 in anticipation, not knowing who would be challenging for each championship in the 'secret santa' concept. It was quite a rollercoaster from start to finish full of up's and downs. We all cheered when the ultimate underdog Dillon Slade finally got his moment in the spotlight when he overcame Robbie X and won the Adrenaline title. We quickly followed up the joy with grasps of horror as Sir Ryan Matthews practically robbed him of the belt and his moment, by cashing in the Go 4 Glory briefcase. We all were over joyed when Sunset Skip finally got one up over on Brad O'Brien by becoming the Heavyweight Champion, ending O'Brien's near on one year reign of terror. However, one of the most special moments of the night involved the DOA Tag Team Championships.
Seeing the NLP's opponents announced as Hot Stuff and Hex was just one of those moments where the old hairs on arms stand up, you know your witnessing a special moment in DOA. Hot Stuff is a legend, it is that simple, a man who has been around since the 90's, and after retirement has made a remarkable comeback to be part of DOA. Meanwhile, Hex is Mr DOA himself, I think you would be hard pushed to find someone that fans love more than Hex, especially in his hometown of Great Yarmouth. Having these two side by side was that moment and actually seeing them win the tag team championships was an occasion where many are simply lost for words.
Could there be a tag team in DOA more loved out there than 'Hot and Hexy' as they aptly named themselves for the match?. Everyone was ecstatic as they lifted the tag team championships in the packed Drill House, it was a moment where you remind yourself "This is why I love wrestling", two legends side by side, back at the top of the ladder again. The elation was not fully absorbed when suddenly Hex took to the microphone and said he had something to say. I am not sure any of us expected what was to follow, and the blow that it dealt to all. Hex called time on his wrestling career - he was retiring!
Wow, did not see that one coming and judging by the look of upset and devastation on the faces of many fans, neither did they. Since the day Ben Hull walked into DOA, he has given his all to the company, he has been part of so many special moments. Who can forget the moment when Ben Hull was cursed and became known as the monster Hex? His tag team runs with best friend Jack E Hyde? The Purge? The countless chokeslams he has dished out? the moment in the spotlight when he became the DOA Heavyweight Champion?. No matter what, Hex has always been there through thick and thin and his time in DOA will always be well remembered by anyone who witnessed it.
His farewell speech was an emotional one as expected, and it even resulted in Cult Leader Jack E Hyde showing his respect to his former tag team partner. Whilst they may have been on different sides for the past year or so, Hex had clearly made a lasting impression on Hyde - after all he is human.
Whilst the timing was not ideal in terms of just winning gold, it could be argued on the counter that it was just perfect timing. Fans got to see Hex wrestle one last time alongside Hot Stuff in a match where they won the tag team titles, and had their arms raised in victory. Hex was able to walk away from DOA with his head held high after dishing out one last chokeslam. Hot Stuff has both tag team belts now and has a mission ahead to find a suitable partner before Saturday's title defence, who will be the right fit? As for Hex, what a legacy he leaves behind, there have been so many comments left by fans on social media, but to sum those collective comments up in one word - 'legend'.
Hex will be missed but the action continues as DOA kicks off it's 2025 run of shows this coming Saturday at the Drill House in Great Yarmouth.
