After what went down in Ipswich last week, it is hard to over look just what exactly is going on at the minute in DOA. Something which started so slowly and innocent last year has developed into something which now cannot and must not be understated. I still remember that show in Ipswich last year when AK attempted to ask Jack E Hyde what had just happened after he seemingly turned his back on long time best friend Hex. Hyde had no comment and simply handed AK a flyer as he stood side by side with an unknown masked man who had just attempted to take out Hex. The flyer was some kind of advert for a cult but at this point it all seemed innocent enough.
However, something was clearly brewing and Jack E Hyde waited until the end of December's show in Great Yarmouth before striking again. Hex had just won the DOA heavyweight championship in his home town, it was a huge moment, a career defining moment for the big man. Hyde should have been by his side in that moment celebrating. Instead he came out to the ring and watched on as two big masked brutes went on to attack Hex. Jack just watched on, even when these two brutes went too far and smashed a chair over his former friend leaving him out cold. This allowed Brad O'Brien to cash in his Go 4 Glory briefcase moments later as Hyde just watched on with his two masked men. It has been revealed now that the two masked men in question are in fact tag team N.L.P and they will make their in match debut this coming weekend at DOA Blaze of Glory in Great Yarmouth. It seems that Jack E Hyde has some kind of pull over these two, and has maybe even brainwashed them - after all, that is what a cult leader does, and Jack E Hyde sure is a cult leader. Last week in Ipswich, he kept out of Hex's way but still managed to manipulate the promising up and comer Danny Fear after making him pass out in a match. Hyde handed him a mask and they left together, this suggests the recruitment drive continues. It is hard to speculate as to what Jack E Hyde's end goal here is. He has always had an air of mystery about him but there must be a motive. He has started a cult and people seem to be jumping onboard every single show, which is worrying. This cult have no limits and we have seen how far they will go to cause maximum destruction - just ask Hex if you dont believe me. These are dangerous times and everyone in DOA must be on high alert as this recruitment drive is well and truly underway. What is this all about? I am sure things will become clearer in the coming months, but for now, be very weary of the Cult of Hyde. For months now, evidence has grown that the Adrenaline Championship is cursed and events at DOA 100 did nothing to dispell those rumours.
Of the last three champions, AJ Benjamin lost the title without getting pinned, Cali Gray lost the title on his first defence, and Ty Hazard lost the title back to Benjamin, also without getting pinned. Yet it was still a shock when Boogie took the microphone following his tag match earlier in the show to announce that he was vacating the title. As a result, the five-way Adrenaline Rush scheduled for later in the show between Dillon Slade, Ty Hazard, Sam Santari, Furio and Josh Spicer was given the added grandeur of crowning a new Adrenaline Champion. The match was a thrilling affair with adrenaline running high throughout both the conpetitors and the crowd. High flying maneuvers, death-defying thrills and spills, and fast-paced exchanges kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. It was Furio who picked up the win and was crowned the new champion. When asked post-match what he thought about the curse, Furio said nothing - though he said nothing to any of the questions he was asked. In fact, his interview raised more questions than answers. First and foremost amongst these is whether the curse of the Adrenaline Championship has finally been broken. To answer that, make sure you tune into or attend our next show. Article by the man with the Microphone AK. Marc Lloyd has always been up front about his main mission in DOA of late: to save Jack E. Hyde from the path he is on. And the Banker must have been feeling that the chance to save Hyde was now or never following Hyde turning on long-time ally Hex at the end of October in Ipswich.
So when Lloyd took on Jack E. Hyde at the DOA 100 show, he knew that the situation was a desperate one and called for desperate measures. The match started with the Banker launching his briefcase into Hyde's face. Though Banker's intention was surely to unsettle, to shock Hyde, the result was undoubtedly not what Lloyd was expecting. Hyde was visibly furious and seemed, if anything, to have snapped. He stormed round the ring shouting incoherently, then proceeded to deflect much of Banker's subsequent offence and striking Banker with lethal blows before picking up the win. Jack E. Hyde would walk his own path for the remainder of the show but Lloyd was notably shaken. In fact, in a postmatch interview, he acknowledged that his mission had failed, that he felt there was no saving Hyde from the path he was on. However, that didn't mean Lloyd is purposeless in DOA. The Farrell Family still casts its long shadow over DOA and Marc Lloyd will do everything he can to stop them. Article by the man with the microphone AK. 'sDOA is set to end 2023 on a high as it heads back to the Drill House in Great Yarmouth on Saturday 9th December for its 100th show. What a milestone this is, but lets not forget that the last time DOA was at the Drill House back in October, it was another milestone - the 10 year anniversary. As usual that show was a roller coaster of emotions, but the lasting image for me was that one of Sunset Skip sat looking dejected in the ring as his time in DOA came to an end.
Sunset Skip without doubt has been one of the most colorful and fun characters to ever step foot in DOA, or british wrestling as a whole it could be argued. This is a man who has given everything to please the fans and has always had that cheeky look in his eyes. Whenever Sunset Skip's music hit, you always knew some magic was going to be created. This is a man who has seen and done it all, a man who learned his craft back in the old days of the territories. There's many a story he could tell, in fact too many to even detail in one article. Lets not forget he is the only wrestler who has ever been offered the presidency of the United States, a chance he ended up declining, probably because he was so focused on wrestling. Legend has it he even once wrestled Hulk Hogan at Maddison Square Garden for the old WWF title - a match he won but sadly it was never recognised in the history books. I guess that moment of magic will only ever be remembered by the packed crowd who shuffled into the Garden that warm summers evening back in 1984. Whilst visiting the states a few years back I did see some guy walking around wearing a T Shirt proclaiming 'I was there when Skip beat Hulk'. Oh, and did you know he is the only wrestler in the world to wrestle inside of a volcano? That may explain his glowing tan. With this kind of history, it hardly seems fair that Sunset Skip's time in DOA came to a crashing end in the manner that it did. So who is the culprit or the culprits behind the demise of Sunset Skip? Lets take a little trip back to 2022 and look at how things escalated between Sunset Skip and the Farrell Family led by Lord Steven Farrell. It is vital to know the history here to fully understand exactly what happened back in October. It is May 2022 and Sunset Skip has a little run in with the Beach City Blondes (Sam Santari and Jaiden Docwra) who at the time were aligned with Lord Steven Farrell. It seems the Lord took some of Skip's comments personally and ended up costing Skip his match against Danny Darko that evening. However, Skip was having none of it and made sure he had the last laugh as he downed Farrell with a trademark bionic elbow. This was the perfect set up for a match between the pair in August of that year and on that hot summers night, everyone was behind Skip. This was a turning point though as it was the night when the Farrell Family as we know it started to come together. The brute Rexx Wylde caused a major distraction during the match which allowed Farrell to knock Skip out with the brass knuckles and get a very cheeky victory. A feud lasting over a year had begun. Skip was not going to let things lie but his problems got bigger when the Family started to grow and Brad O'Brien was introduced as their new Jewell in the crown. Whilst at another promotion, Skip was suddenly jumped backstage by a masked man and his prized Pan Arabian Championship was stolen. It came as no surprise that O'Brien suddenly started to parade around with the belt and revealed he was the masked attacker. It was getting all quite overwhelming for Skip, not only did he want revenge on Farrell for the match in August, he wanted his belt back from O'Brien. At the 9 year anniversary show he had the opportunity to at least even the score with Lord Steven as they both featured in a big 6 man tag team match. Again, Skip had the match won but whilst the referee was distracted, Brad O'Brien slid in the ring and nailed him with his own belt. Skip had been cheated yet again and the feud had to continue as the Family really had become a thorn in his side. Skip had a huge chance in March 2023 to not only get one over on Brad O'Brien, but to finally get back his Pan Arabian title, a belt that O'Brien had since renamed the Social Media championship. It appeared to be Skip's last chance and he went into that match with a score to settle, but further underhanded tactics made him fall short yet again. O'Brien was able to parade around with the so called Social Media Championship, and Skip was a bit lost without it. However, he started to fight back despite the numbers always being against him and finally defeated Farrell in a singles match which was appropriately a brass knuckles on a pole match. All he then needed to do was finally get his hands on O'Brien to get that belt back. The veteran had to wait until the second half of 2023 though when DOA came to Bury St Edmunds. O'Brien had been out injured and so Skip was the first man in the line to request a match with O'Brien for the championship once it was confirmed he would be back in action. Prior to this, Sunset Skip had enjoyed a big victory as he had won the Go 4 Glory briefcase meaning he could cash in on any championship. He intended to use this prize to get back what was his but it was not valid as the Social Media championship was not (is not) a recognised official DOA championship. There was a Plan B though and O'Brien agreed to put the title on the line if Skip put the briefcase on the line. There was no hesitation and it was all or nothing for Skip as the two men went head to head yet again, in a feud that had spanned over a year at this point. It was not to be and yet again the numbers game was too much for Skip and a distraction from old rival Lord Steven Farrell who was ringside with O'Brien cost him the match. Everything had gone full circle and something had to give ahead of the 10 year anniversary show which is where Skip was set to battle Farrell yet again after the match was made by then Director of Authority Marc Lloyd. At this point, Skip would still do anything to get back his prized belt and Farrell agreed to defend the Social Media championship on O'Brien's behalf, but yet again there was a catch. This time Skip had to put his career on the line! Never one to back down, Skip agreed and the pressure was on when he walked out at the Drill House. They say history never repeats but the way it all unfolded looked very familiar, Brad O'Brien yet again being involved in the downfall of Skip as Steven Farrell pinned him to bring down the curtain on his time in DOA. As Farrell and O'Brien celebrated, the usual cheery figure of Skip sat in the ring attempting to come to terms with what had just happened. It was a sad sight and even in his post match interview with AK, the glint in the eye of Sunset Skip had gone as he talked about now riding off into the sunset. So who really was responsible for this downfall? Both O'Brien and Farrell have been a thorn in the side, and probably as bad as each other. However, lets look at the facts here, Brad O'Brien is the one who has taken everything from Skip - first his prized title, then his go 4 glory briefcase, and then finally, he caused the distraction for the big defeat. Brad O'Brien has got a lot to answer for now because there is no denying that the absence of Skip is going to leave a large black hole in DOA. There was a special bond between him and the fans, so lets pay tribute to the man himself - Sunset Skip. As he rides off into the sunset, his legacy remains and we will always look back with fondness when we think of Sunset Skip! Thank you Skip! In September 2023 at Fury Road in Bury St Edmunds, Brad O'Brien became the latest in a long line to win the Go 4 Glory briefcase. He defeated Sunset Skip in controversial circumstances to take the prize, although this opportunity came about by complete chance as O'Brien was not one of the original competitors fighting for the glory this year. First of all, for those who do not know, the Go 4 Glory briefcase entitles the holder to any championship match of their choosing, and at anytime. It holds great power and over the years there have been many champions crowned after cashing the briefcase in for a shot at a championship - often unexpectedly.
So I mentioned that Brad O'Brien was not in the original match for the briefcase, and this is true, he was out injured at the time. The Go 4 Glory match took place on the 24th June in Bury St Edmunds and the fatal four way match featured Danny Darko, Sunset Skip, Rexx Wylde and Garzya. Sunset Skip won the match and therefore took the briefcase meaning he could gain any championship match of his choosing. After a couple of months of mulling over his options he made a big decision. Whilst there is no doubt many people thought Sunset Skip would want the DOA Heavyweight Championship, he wanted something more personal to him, something that means a lot. He wanted back his prized Pan Arabian championship - the belt that was stolen from him last year by Brad O'Brien and renamed the Social Media Championship. Skip wanted back what was rightfully his and therefore he felt he had a golden opportunity by cashing in the Go 4 Glory briefcase to get it. There was just one problem though. The then Director of Authority Marc Lloyd had to inform Sunset Skip that the Social Media championship is not an official DOA championship meaning the Go 4 Glory briefcase could not be used. This news played right in to the hands of the devious Brad O'Brien who stated that the only way he would defend the belt against Skip again would be if Skip put the briefcase on the line. Skip without hesitation agreed to the match and therefore in an unforeseen move, O'Brien despite not being in the Go 4 Glory match had the chance to be the holder of the briefcase. In the match, the usual Farrell Family antics followed, O'Brien won and the rest as they say is history. To date, Brad has not yet even made any hints as to when he will cash in the briefcase (sorry he has named it the beefcase now) or when. So lets just take a little look at the possible options he has now and what is the most probable scenario. DOA Heavyweight Championship This is the obvious one isn't it? I mean, who would not want to become the DOA Heavyweight champion - the biggest prize in the company? It may be the most obvious but it is not the one everyone has gone for historically. A lot of thinking is required when making such a big decision and Brad needs to look closely at who he would be crossing paths with if he went for this belt. Big Joe is the current champion - a man who has just won the tournament of death, the man is a beast, he is far bigger and more powerful than O'Brien, so would it be wise to pick a fight with him? Brett Semtex is next in line to face Big Joe in December in a match where he could become a two time champion. Like Big Joe, Semtex is bigger than the beefcake and has that MMA background in his arsenal. O'Brien is not stupid and he knows that cashing in for the heavyweight title would not be easy and he would be picking a fight with a much bigger and stronger person. DOA Adrenaline Championship Brad O'Brien is quite unique in that he can fit into both the heavyweight division and the adrenaline division. He can go toe to toe with bigger guys but he can also move quick and do some high flying, so this championship would also be an option. If we are looking back in history, O'Brien could be compared to someone like Dexter who did indeed win Go 4 Glory and cashed in to win the Adrenaline championship. Maybe O'Brien would fancy his chances against AJ Boogie Benjamin who has only just won the title back after it changed hands twice within a month. Boogie and O'Brien are similar sizes and there is no doubt a match between them would give the fans their moneys worth. It has to be said that in his 13 year career, Brad has never won a heavyweight title, but he has also never won a recognised DOA title - the Adrenaline title could be a strong start. DOA Tag Team Championships This could be an interesting option given that O'Brien's Farrell Family stable mates The Wylde Kings have just lost the tag team straps. I don't know if it is just me, but has anyone else sensed in recent months there seems to be a little bit of tension between the Wylde Kings and the rest of the Family? The Kings have hardly been seen at the same time and in the same place as O'Brien and Lord Steven Farrell - indeed they were even absent from Brad's Go 4 Glory celebration which he shared only with Farrell and Sir Ryan Matthews. The tension seems to stem ironically from the Go 4 Glory event in June when the Wylde Kings abandoned Farrell and left him at the mercy of the Banker's boot. With that said, could it be an option that the King of Couture teams with Lord Steven or Sir Ryan to cash in on the tag team champions - the Dark and the Shark (Danny Darko and Dillon Slade)? There is certainly no love loss between O'Brien and Dillon Slade, which does make this quite a realistic option. DOA Women's Championship Well the rules do state ANY title shot - bit of a wild card but I think it is safe to say that Brad O'Brien knows better than to mess with the seemingly unstoppable women's champion Leia Elise! DOA Pandemonium Title The most unique of the championships in DOA and the newest of all titles. Each challenger can choose the match stipulation and these range between the weird and the wonderful - something which could be a risk to O'Brien due to his love of his image and how unpredictable this title can be. With that said though, he is quite well matched size wise to the current holder Jack E Hyde and he could see this title as a realistic target, I would not be surprised if he is giving it some serious thought and weighing up the pros and cons. The other thing that the Beefcake has to weigh up here is who he would be messing with if he was to try some of his funny business. Just like with the heavyweight title, it is hard to see him getting away with too much against Hyde due to his relationship with the cursed monster Hex - the biggest man in DOA. Hex has always had Hyde's back and the Farrell Family have learned from past experience he is not someone you can mess with and come out on top against. Food for thought. So those are the options, you can speculate what Brad will choose to do, but ultimately, only he knows the plan, and there is always a plan it seems. Photograph by Mark Ashley Films As the 'Insider' of DOA, I like to think I know about most things that are going on - the news and all the gossip. However, one thought provoking thing I did not pick up on until the 10 year anniversary show was the so called 'curse' of the Adrenaline division championship. It was not until our man with the microphone AK asked then champion Ty Hazard about the rumors of a curse on the title that I really took note. I am the kind of guy who refuses to walk under ladders and always salutes at magpies, I guess I am superstitious to an extent, so this rumor of a curse could have something in it...or not. DOA's Adrenaline division features some of the UK's hottest prospects, it can be high flying, fast paced and most of all exciting. The title history of the Adrenaline championship alone tells you all that you need to know with the list of people who have held that belt. Jody Fleisch, Ashley Dunn, Banker Marc Lloyd, Peter Nixon and Ash Draven just to name a few. When Ty Hazard won the championship from Cali Grey at Fury Road in September, he was the 13th holder of the title - at this point, the number 13 and curses could go hand in hand, but that is not the thread I am going to take here - promise. Looking back at the history of the Adrenaline championship it is hard to see where curses could come in to the picture. The title has always been stable with some good reigns during its history and some long ones. The longest serving Adrenaline champion was Dexter who defeated Kelly Sixx for the belt before losing it to CJ Carter in late 2021. It could be argued that the reason for this long reign was helped in a big way by the Covid Pandemic and various lockdown's. Dexter won the title pre pandemic and obviously there was no live wrestling for a year or so, which meant the days stacked up in Dexter's favor to give him the accolade of the longest running Adrenaline Division Champion. Another long reign was in more recent memory when the fan favorite AJ Boogie Benjamin took DOA by storm by winning the title very early on in his DOA career after it was vacated due to CJ Carter's retirement. He was a fighting champion making several top defenses of the championship in a reign that lasted nearly a year up until Beach Ball Mania in August 2023. At this point you may be reading this and stating that there is no sign of a supposed curse so where does that actually come in to it? Well it is in fact Beach Ball Mania when things took a bit of a turn. In a very unique match, AJ Boogie teamed with Karama against Cali Grey and Women's champion Leia Elise where both the Adrenaline and Women's championships were on the line - meaning either way a new champion would be crowned. This match was nothing but frustration for AJ Boogie because Elise pinned Karama which meant that Cali Grey was the new Adrenaline champion. After such a long reign, Benjamin had lost his title without even being pinned, and he had to watch Cali Grey parade around as the new champion. What happened next though caught everyone by surprise when Grey traveled to Fury Road in September to make his first defense against Ty Hazard. At this point, despite producing some top matches including against Robbie X, Hazard had not exactly grabbed the victories that would make him a favorite to win the championship. Cali Grey looked confident but could simply not keep Ty Hazard down who caused a huge upset and pinned Grey to become the champion. Within the matter of just a month, AJ Boogie, Grey and Ty had all held the Adrenaline title, such a quick turn around. The fact that Boogie lost it and had not been pinned and then Grey lost it in his first defense is where the talk of a curse came from. After the quick changes of champion, it came as no surprise that the ten year anniversary show featured a triple threat match where Ty Hazard would defend the title against Cali Grey and AJ Boogie. In his pre match interview when asked about the so called curse by AK, Ty Hazard played it down and seemed confident that he would put an end to that talk and leave the show still champion. In retrospect, that confidence could have been misplaced because sure enough AJ Boogie Benjamin won the match and became the first ever two time Adrenaline champion. This created a unique situation where both Grey and Ty had lost the title in their very first defense. Ty showed respect to AJ after the match and shook his hand but the look of shock on his face said it all - maybe the comments about a curse were playing on his mind? Cali losing it in his first defense was one thing but for it to then happen to Ty too?
So is the title cursed? The first logical questions to ask are why would it be cursed and who cursed it? I mean lets face it, DOA is no stranger to curses, poor Ben Hull was cursed years ago by the Voodoo Queen and that is why he ended up as Hex, but what reason would she have to curse a belt she had no contact with during her time in DOA? Maybe just doing it for a laugh? Cali Grey has quite a dark personality so it really would not shock me to learn that he was in to the dark arts or something. However, I doubt he would conjure up some kind of curse that would cost him the title (twice) as that would make no sense - unless he is new to it all and did it by accident? As you can see, I find no logical reason for the belt to be cursed or who would have cursed it. However, I think the key here is going to be Boogie's next title defense because if he were to lose it, I think I would be a believer that there is something really dark happening here. Even then though, that could be a psychological barrier due to these rumors, but if he wins his first defense, it is safe to say this all just happened by chance and he is now back on track, picking up where he left off before the title was taken from him without even being pinned. Still though... what if? Photographs by Mark Ashley Films It all seemed to be a bit of fun at the time, there was Dillon Slade trying to win over Lord Steven Farrell in their match at Beach Ball Mania, when he slipped to the outside and put on a shark costume. The costume was in line with the show theme and casually lay in wait under the ring until Slade slipped it on. It is pretty obvious by now that Dillon Slade is just a fun loving guy, someone who could be described as similar to an excited puppy. This was just an attempt at a bit of fun but it did not go down well with Lord Steven who labelled him an 'embarrassment'.
Since back in May, Dillon Slade has been attempting to impress Farrell and the Family in hope of being the new member. Each attempt seemed to be in vein though and something always seemed to go wrong which resulted in the Family stringing Slade along and offering second, third and fourth chances to prove himself. The victory over Farrell himself should have been the moment where Slade had finally proven himself 'worthy' but the shark costume proved to be another excuse for the Family to reject Slade. However, not one to give up, Dillon Slade had another plan up his sleeve to try and win his place in the group. He was handed a shot at the Pandemonium championship against Jack E Hyde - a title previously held by Lord Farrell. Slade saw this as a perfect opportunity to win the title and impress the Family by bringing it back to them. As with any Pandemonium championship match, as the challenger, Slade was able to choose the match stipulation. In what was one of the most bizarre match stipulations in DOA history, Dillon chose that the loser must where a shark costume for the rest of the year - the very same shark costume Slade wore at Beach Ball Mania. When explaining his reason for choosing this, Slade stated that this was his chance to embarrass someone - Jack E Hyde. Ahead of the match at Fury Road two weeks ago, Slade was beaming with confidence as he informed Steven Farrell and Brad O'Brien he was going to bring the belt back to the family. Farrell seemed disgusted and O'Brien simply told him to 'shut up'. Regardless, Slade went out for the match and equaled Hyde step by step. Things took a dramatic turn though when Jack E Hyde used the middle rope to low blow Slade and then hit a stunner before placing his feet on the ropes for leverage and scored a pinfall victory. Dillon Slade had lost and Lord Steven Farrell ensured he was there to hand Slade the shark costume and tell him he was cutting him loose as there must be better options. The normally excitable Slade looked lost and broken as he left the ring and headed backstage. As it turned out, the Family recruited Sir Ryan Matthews later that night showing they were done and dusted with Dillon Slade once and for all. Many would question what Dillon Slade's mindset would be following that big moment, but to everyone's surprise, there appeared to be a new lease of life as we later found out. At the end of Fury Road, Dillon Slade complete with shark costume was one of the wrestlers that followed Banker Marc Lloyd out to the ring to save Ben Jones. During the Banker's speech where he made several matches for the upcoming 10 year anniversary show - he announced that tag team champions The Wylde Kings would defend against Danny Darko and none other than Dillon Slade! With that news, Slade was back to his normal self and unable to contain his excitement as he celebrated by jumping on Darko's back. The tables have turned and now Dillon Slade has a huge opportunity to not only get one over on the Family who rejected him, but also to become a tag team champion. What better person to have by his side - Danny Darko, a man who has pretty much seen and done it all in DOA. Whilst he came up short in his most recent tag team match with the Wylde Kings, he did defeat Rexx Wylde in a singles match at Beach Ball Mania. The beer downing former champion now has a different kind of partner by his side though in the form of a man dressed as a shark. Dillon Slade his shown us all he is loyal, he has heart and he has guts, combine that with someone like Darko and we have a great tag team match on our hands. The Wylde Kings, now in their second reign as tag team champions cannot be under estimated though - they are simply two brutes, they have the power and they have the experience of working as a tag team. But just imagine, the beer drinker and the man in a shark costume winning the belts? That surely without any doubt would be another DOA first right there! |
