All the fun of Beach Ball Mania rolled around again as DOA headed back to the Drill House in Great Yarmouth for host Peter Nixon's annual event. All eyes were on the big Heavyweight Championship match as Brett Semtex defended the title against Big F'N Joe, a man who he knows all too well. This was always going to be a clash of the titan's match and it could be said that Semtex had a slight edge going in to the match due to his past record against Big Joe in DOA. However, after a hard hitting main event with both men giving it their all, it was Big Joe who scored the victory to be crowned the new DOA Heavyweight Champion.
The end scenes were a far cry from the previous meeting between the pair last year when Semtex actually defeated Big Joe on his debut, and then went on to clinch the championship in the same night. Joe celebrated with the fans but was suddenly interrupted by the DOA Director of Authority 'Banker' Marc Lloyd who declared there would be a rematch at October's big 10 year anniversary show between the pair for the title. The fans welcomed the news and it did not seem to phase Big Joe who was full of confidence. Joe walked out with the biggest prize in DOA but former MMA star Brett Semtex will already be preparing for the rematch to try and get back the title.
The Heavyweight championship was not the only prize on the line. In a unique match up, the feared Women's champion Leia Elise teamed with Cali Grey to take on Adrenaline Division Champion AJ Boogie Benjamin and DOA woman's division new comer Karama. It was not that this match was a mixed tag team match that made it unique, it was the fact that both the Womens title and the Adranline title on the line, meaning there would be a new champion no matter what. Cali Grey ended up downing Karama with a double underhook piledriver before Elise took her out with a spear and pinned her for the three. This result meant that Cali Grey became the new Adrenaline champion without actually pinning the Boogie man. In post match, the usual chipper mood of AJ Benjamin was not there after losing the title in such circumstances, but he did vow he would take it back from Grey.
In an emotional moment, the cursed monster and fan favorite, Hex stepped out of the crowd in his street clothes and made a personal announcement. Hex mentioned that he was side lined with a serious knee injury and therefore would not be able to defend his Pandemonium championship. Hex called out his long time friend and Forgotten tag team partner Jack E Hyde and stated he deserved to carry the belt, something the Yarmouth crowd vocally agreed with. In a twist of events, Hex stated that he was scheduled to defend in an over the top rope match and that is what he would do. He proceeded to step out of the ring over the top rope meaning that Jack E Hyde was the new champion. There is no word on how long Hex will be out of action but for now, it seems the championship is in the safe hands of Hyde.
This years Adranline cup tournament started to reach its climax as both semi finals were played out at Beach Ball Mania. In the opening contest, Ben Jones took on Harrison Payne, who was a last minute replacement for the AWOL Truman Roswell. It is somewhat of a mystery as to what exactly has happened to Roswell and Jones will have had no time to prepare for a different opponent. However, he kept up his fine form of 2023 and booked his place in the final of the cup with a pinfall victory.
The other semi final saw Richie Gopaul go up against Sir Ryan Matthews in what was a top display of technical wrestling. Gopaul may have had the slight edge after pinning Matthews in a tag team match featuring the semi finalists in Ipswich last month. Prior to the match though, Sir Ryan seemed full of confidence as he boasted how he would take down the Student of the Game and get to the final. He was a man of his word and Sir Ryan stole the victory to set up a final match with Ben Jones at Fury Road in September.
Last month in Ipswich, The Wylde Kings defeated Danny Darko and Franklin to retain the DOA tag team championships. Darko had redemption on his mind at Beach Ball Mania as he went one on one with Rexx Wylde. These main stays of DOA produced a top back and forth match using their wealth of experience to try and get the upper hand on each other. It was Darko who got the last laugh though when he managed to keep the Wild Man down for the three count. Will this mean that Darko has done enough to earn another shot at the tag team gold?
Since March, Dillon Slade has been attempting to prove himself to Lord Steven Farrell so that he will be accepted in to the Farrell Family. It has not been going well and it appeared Farrell was losing patience as he demanded Slade faced him one on one to show him what he is made of. Slade was at times reluctant to go on the offence but each time he failed to, Lord Steven ended up making him pay for it. Somehow Slade ended up dressed as a shark and pinning Farrell from a quick roll up after the Lord attempted a figure 4 leg lock. Farrell was furious and after the match labelled Slade an embarrassment, but with victory, does this now mean Slade is a member of the Family?
Meanwhile, Mike Illingworth battled it out with Sassy Bear Clarence in an entertaining match. Illingworth known for his underhanded tactics and doing anything to win, managed to steal a victory from Clarence and gain something to boast about. After the match, Illingworth interrupted an interview where Alec Burnitt was catching a few words with Tommy Lawrence, a man who wants to make his mark in the Adrenaline Division. Illingworth claimed that Lawrence had no right to be there and that this was his moment to start to shine in DOA, a bold statement which Lawrence did not agree with. After they went face to face, Illingworth backed off and left.
As ever, it was a stacked night in Great Yarmouth, and a night where three new champions were crowned. There is sure to be some backlash to these events at Fury Road in Bury St Edmunds on the 16th September.
